Every so often, the right people come along with a project that pushes me beyond my usual limits. This was one of those. It redefined what I thought I was capable of with work on canvas.
This foyer had been waiting for the right piece for a long time. Photos don’t quite capture the scale. The ceiling peaks at about 24 feet.
The couple who commissioned it are passionate collectors, but this space needed something that truly belonged to them. We worked together on the concept, the colors, and the overall style. I created a dozen digital mockups, and from there we narrowed it down to this design. Throughout our sessions, they brought in symbols, textures, and ideas that shaped the final piece.
There’s something deeply rewarding about helping people bring their vision to life, especially when that vision only becomes possible through collaboration. I love creating for myself, but there’s something even more meaningful about co-creating with others.
This is the largest work on canvas I’ve completed so far. The center column measures 16 feet 8 inches by 5 feet 6 inches. The side panels are 40 by 60 inches. Each canvas was custom built from quality pine and hand stretched. The texture is thick and layered, and developing new material combinations to make it work at this scale was its own challenge. The entire color palette was mixed from primaries and built specifically for these clients.
